American cuisine is vast and has been influenced by nearby countries, travellers that have spent time in the country and many other aspects. Each state has a dish, whether that may be a sweet or a savoury one, that is linked to it or originated from that state. To go through all fifty-two of these would mean creating a whole book dedicated just to this but here are a few of the main highlights for you.
California – The ‘Golden State’ is actually the country’s biggest producer of dairy including milk, cream, cheese and of course the delicious ice cream. Unlike in other areas where large corporate companies run the farms, in California it is thought that over 90 percent of the dairy farms are owned and run by family businesses.
Hawaii – if you are looking for an incredible coffee fix then it is worth heading to Hawaii as they are the only American state that grows coffee beans. There are around 700 coffee farms in the Kona region alone and they produce, each year, about three million pounds of coffee beans. Now that a big caffeine hit!
Idaho – is the country’s largest producer of potatoes. Whilst these vegetables are grown in virtual every state across the country none of them produce the volumes that they do in Idaho.
Kansas – the ‘Wizard of Oz’ state produces immense amounts of wheat each year and could produce 36 billion loaves of bread from the harvest each year.
Maine – is home to all thing’s lobster. If you want to taste the delicacy of a freshly caught lobster then head to Maine as around 100 million pounds of lobster are caught each year. If you are a fan of the crustacean then you could also head to Maryland which is known for its harvesting of the Blue Crab.
